Google Nexus One Sales Pale Next to Apple iPhone and Even the Motorola Flurry

Some 74 days after launch Google's Nexus One Android device seems to have sold only 135,000 units, which pales compared to the 1 million achieved by the iPhone and the 1.05 million over the same period achieved by the Motorola Flurry, Nomura global technology specialist Richard Windsor wrote in a March 17 research note.
He attributes Google's low sales to its go to market strategy: the device is only being sold through the number four U.S. carrier and  through a web portal and has not really had anything in the way of marketing.  The device may do better once it is sold through Verizon and Vodafone, Windsor says.
Still, "this is positive for Nokia as it clearly demonstrates that a great device is rarely enough to sell big volumes," he says.  "Supply chain, distribution and marketing are clearly very important and these are areas that Nokia is very good at."
Nokia, though will have more competition to its mid-range of phones once Samsung releases Bada. Its future success will depend on the quality of the user interface of Symbian 4.  In the meantime U.S. players like Apple and Google will continue to steal the headlines even if the amount of marketshare they are currently stealing is only a fraction of global handset sales.
