But his words certainly struck a chord: three years ago, the platform was considered niche at best. Orange Acquire a 34% Minority Interest in Skyrock’s Web Operations

Orange announced that it has paid 14 million euros to acquire a 34.15% minority interest in Cascadia, a holding company which combines the web and mobile operations of Skyrock, France’s leading radio station in the 12-24 age group.Read more

Orange Buys 49% of French YouTube rival DailyMotion

 Orange announced January 25 that it will acquire 49% of DailyMotion, the world's second largest video site, behind YouTube, from existing shareholders on a current enterprise value of €120 million. The deal includes  a flexible agreement to grow ownership in the company in 2013 or for the parties to agree on other strategic shareholders at a total enterprise value that would fall within a range of €120 million to €200 million based on performance. Read more

France's Silicon Sentier Reaches Out to Tel Aviv's Techies

Israeli tech companies have long looked to the U.S. for inspiration, funding and expansion, but the March 18 opening of HaCantina, a Tel Aviv branch of Paris entrepreneurial hub "La Cantine",  could signal the start of a new era. The Tel Aviv tech community is increasingly connecting with French enterpreneurs in areas such as open source software and mobile TV and the new center is expected to rachet up  collaboration.Read more

Orange Partners With NetVibes On Mobile Widgets

Orange and Netvibes  announced March 4 a partnership to bring a collection of mobile widgets to all types of mobile phone user across an extensive range of handsets. Netvibes' catalogue of nearly 200,000 real-time widgets will be available on Orange widgets, a service featuring on 80% of handsets shipped by Orange. It will also be available on djinngo mobile, an Orange service open to any mobile phone user in the world. Mobile widgets will also shortly be available to Orange customers in the recently launched Orange Application Shop.

European Mobile Industry Consolidates

Plans by Deutsche Telekom and France Telekom to merge their U.K. phone units is a sign of further consolidation in the industry as financial pressure increases on European phone companies. The deal, announced Sept. 8, would create the U.K.’s largest cellular operator, catapulting the merged entity ahead of Telefonica’s 02 unit and pushing rival Vodafone to number three in its home market.Read more

Blyk's Saga: The Limits of Ad-Supported Mobile

Blyk, a European ad-supported mobile phone service with gold-plated backing and a dream management team, was considered a serious potential threat to mobile operators when it launched in 2006. But mobile advertising has not reaped the hoped-for financial benefits for either Blyk or traditional operators. Now, the two sides are teaming up in the hopes of getting better results.
