An Economic Argument For the Female Decade

I was a teenager in the 1970s, the heady days of the women's movement when bra burning and slogans such as "A Woman Without A Man Is Like a Fish Without A Bicycle"  were in vogue.  We were promised we could have it all.

There has most certainly been progress in the last 30 years. But there are still too few women leading venture-backed companies. Too few in top management of bigger companies in Europe and not enough women on the boards of companies of any size. European Internet Shoe Retailer Spartoo.com Secures 12 million Euros in Follow-on Funding

 Spartoo.com, a European site that sells  footwear over the Internet, announced Jan. 13 that it has  closed on a €12 million Series B round of financing to accelerate growth. 

This funding round was led by Highland Capital Partners and Endeavour Vision.  They were joined by existing investors A Plus Finance and CM-CIC Capital Privé. Read more

Israeli Mobile TV Chip Company Raises $24 million in Series D Round

 Siano Mobile Silicon, a supplier of mobile digital TV receiver chips, has raised $23.5 million in a fourth round of funding.

The round consists exclusively of all of Siano's existing investors: JVP, DFJ-Tamir-Fishman, Star Ventures, Walden Israel, and Bessemer Venture Partners.Read more

Daily Motion Announces $25 Million Funding Round

  DailyMotion, the French video sharing sites which attracts 60 million unique monthly visitors and one billion video views worldwide, announced October 22 that it has raised $25 million (€17 million) in a round led by the French Sovereign Fund and original investors Advent Venture Partners, AGF Private Equity, Atlas Venture and Partech International.Read more

Russia's Serial Entrepreneurs Launch A New Crop of Hot Companies

U.S. skeptics said it couldn't be done but Natalya Kaspersky built a company inside Russia that today has annual revenues of $500 million and is ranked as one of the top five anti-virus companies worldwide. Now she is on to her next venture, InfoWatch, which is targeting another area of data security. Kaspersky is just one of the Russian serial entrepreneurs who presented their companies to global venture capitalists during a recent tech tour of Moscow, Tatarstan and Siberia.
